Q:
What is the TAFF’s grantmaking process?
A:

We see ourselves as partners with our grantees, working together toward common goals. (This is why we refer to our grantees as “grantee-partners.”) Each year, we allocate our grantmaking budget primarily to supporting existing grantees, only occasionally adding new agencies to our portfolio of grants.

We see a congruence of values and the development of trust as being fundamental to our process. We will have an initial meeting with potential grantees in order to learn more about one other. During this first meeting, we will also introduce our foundation and its philosophy.

Following the initial meeting, your organization may be invited to submit a brief letter of inquiry seeking a grant. If the proposed program is consistent with the foundation’s focus and current priorities, we will request a full proposal. We will also notify you if the program is not in alignment with our foundation’s goals at this time.

Once your organization is invited to submit a proposal, we assist you in crafting the best possible proposal. Our long-term goal is not just to create a one-time proposal, but to help you formulate a grantseeking approach that can be used in the future with other funders, as well.

Q:
What is the average size and duration of your grants?
A:

The average size of TAFF grants is $50,000 for a one-year funding cycle.

Q:
How many grants do you award each year?
A:

We award about 16 grants a year.

Do you have formal application forms? Can you send me an application?
A:

The application forms are available here. If you are invited to apply, we will provide you with the password.

Q:
Do you fund general operating expenses?
A:

We sometimes award funding for core operating support to organizations with which we have a long-established relationship. We may consider providing core operating support once we have already had the opportunity to collaborate.

Does funding allow for general operating expenses?
A:

Yes. We believe that a strong administrative capacity is central to our partners’ long-term success.

Q:
Do you give grants to for-profit organizations?
A:

We do not.

THE GRANT APPLICATION
Q:
Does TAFF award multi-year funding?
A:

We operate with the philosophy that achieving sustainable change requires building long-term relationships with our grantee-partners. While our grant awards are for one year only, we enter each relationship with the goal of continual funding following financial and programmatic review.

Q:
What are your deadlines for receipt of proposals?
A:

We fund year-round.

Q:
How long does it take for a grant to be approved?
A:

Grants are approved approximately 15-60 days from the receipt of the proposal. We will notify you if your proposal has been accepted or rejected. The funding follows shortly after approval.

What help is available in preparing a grant proposal?
A:

The foundation staff are available to help you through the process.

Q:
How will I know if you received my letter of inquiry or proposal?
A:

After we receive your letter of inquiry or proposal, you will receive an acknowledgement letter or phone call from us to acknowledge that we received it. If we need any additional material or have questions, we will contact you.

Q:
Should we send letters of support with our letter of inquiry or with a proposal?
A:

We prefer that you do not.

Q:
Does the foundation conduct site visits to potential grantees?
A:

We often make site visits prior to extending potential partners an invitation to apply.

Q:
If we are invited to submit a full proposal, what kinds of supporting documentation will we be asked to submit?
A:
